Biochar

Biochar is the solid product of biomass pyrolysis process, which is a carbonaceous residue. Depending on biomass composition and pyrolysis process condition, biochar can have different chemical and physical properties. For instance, its carbon content could range from 53 wt.% to 96 wt.%. In addition, the yield and heating value of char also varied in a wide range (30–-90 wt.% and 20–-36 MJ/kg, respectively). Biochar can be supplied as a soil amendment including carbon sequestration, soil fertility improvement, pollution remediation and agricultural by-product/waste recycling. It can also be used in catalytic utilisation, energy storage and environmental protection and a sustainable platform carbon material for other high-value applications. Some companies used it as a sorbent for the removal of pollutants in water. In addition, biochar also could be used as a sorbent for the removal of pollutants in flue gas, such as SO2 and NOX. Biochar can have a lot of applications. The main ones are soil amendment, fertiliser, filter and also with having an energy content of 28 MJ/kg can be a proper solid fuel to convert into heat and electricity.
